With a passion for travel and salt water guiding his path, surf travel photographer Matt Power is on a journey of connection and growth. We caught up with Matt and talked inspirations, adventures gone by and when it all clicks into place...
At the heart of it I’m driven by a curiosity for the unknown. Ever since I was young I knew I wanted to explore places that were unfamiliar. The thought of travelling to far away places in search of different cultures and landscapes always played on my mind.
Discovering surf and ocean photography changed everything, this has become my passion and inspires everything I do. I find myself lured to adventures rich in salt water escapism these days.
I have learned that I am capable of things I couldn’t imagine; it's just a case of getting out there and leaving your comfort zone. It is said a lot but so true that you cannot grow without pushing yourself to the next level. By trying to replace fear with curiosity, I feel I have been able to push my limits.
Whilst traveling, it's so important to appreciate every moment. Every little thing. Even the moments that seem frustrating or bad at the time. It’s all part of the journey and that’s what makes us who we are at the end of the day.
At the time of writing things feel right in place. Creativity ebbs and flows, and at this point I’m feeling driven. When this is paired with good waves, which aren’t always around, I feel at the peak of my creativity. In surf photography it can be frustrating waiting for the conditions to align, especially when time limitations are a factor. My favourite space to be in is when I have time to work on personal projects with pumping waves.
Sometimes I feel like I would like to relive my first trip away from home. It was to Asia and Australia when I was 18, me and a friend spent 6 months exploring there. I remember the feeling of first stepping into such a different culture, and the pure excitement and nerves that came with it. All the senses awaken when you step into something new, from the smell of the street food to the vibrant colours of the Asian landscape. That's a vibe that I really crave.
Where next? Looks like a mixture of more tropical adventures along with cold water missions and even some time in the mountains. I can’t quite say yet where exactly but keep an eye out on my social to see what’s up. All I know is that I don’t intend to stop the adventure yet...
